Cox’s Bazar, Oct 02 (V7N) – A Rohingya man was seriously injured in a landmine explosion inside Myanmar’s Rakhine State on Thursday, according to his family and border officials.
The injured man, identified as Mohammad Hamid Hossain Sundori, 40, is a resident of Block C-27 of the registered Rohingya camp in Kutupalong, Ukhiya. He is the son of the late Kalam Hossain.
The explosion occurred around 3:30pm in Myanmar territory across the Palongkhali border in Ukhiya, according to officials.
Lieutenant Colonel Zahirul Islam, commander of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion 64, said the explosion took place about two kilometres north of Border Road Marker (BRM)-19 and around 250 yards west of the zero line inside Myanmar.
Hamid was injured in the blast and crossed into Bangladesh, the BGB commander said.
With assistance from BGB personnel and local residents, he was rescued and taken to the MSF hospital in Kutupalong for treatment, he added.
The BGB commander said regular patrols and surveillance along the border were continuing.
Local sources said some Rohingya and Bangladeshi nationals occasionally cross into Myanmar territory allegedly for smuggling activities. Such movements have previously resulted in casualties from landmine explosions, they said.
