Teknaf, Sept 28 (V7N) – Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained three Rohingya men with two G3 rifles, ammunition and explosives during an operation in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, on Sunday. An easy-bike was also seized.
The suspects were detained around 1:30pm in the Leda Bazar area of Hnila Union by a team from Teknaf Battalion (2 BGB), following intelligence information.
According to BGB, the team stopped an easy-bike carrying the three men and detected the presence of metal inside a sack using a metal detector. The vehicle and the three passengers were subsequently taken to Leda Border Outpost for further inspection.
During the search, BGB personnel recovered two G3 rifles, two locally made single-barrel firearms, 42 rounds of ammunition, one magazine, three Tasers, six walkie-talkies and around 4kg of explosive substances from inside a sack of potatoes.
Twenty-five containers of chewing tobacco and 25 rolls of red Scotch tape were also recovered. Three mobile phones were seized as well.
The detainees were identified as Mohammad Usman and Mohammad Ansar Ali, residents of the Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Ukhiya, and Mohammad Muslim, a resident of Rohingya Camp-26 in Teknaf.
BGB said the three suspects were handed over to Teknaf Model Police Station in the afternoon for legal proceedings.
According to BGB, the seized arms and explosives were allegedly being transported to an armed robbery group operating from a Rohingya camp.
Lieutenant Colonel Hanifur Rahman Bhuiyan, commander of Teknaf Battalion (2 BGB), said intelligence surveillance and operations would continue to prevent arms and explosives smuggling and organised crime in the border areas.
Legal action against the detainees is underway, BGB said.
