Ukhiya, Aug 07 (V7N) — A Bangladeshi national was seriously injured in a landmine explosion inside Myanmar near the Bangladesh-Myanmar border on Thursday morning, according to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The injured man was identified as Md. Badiul Alam, 45, a resident of Jumer Chhara in Balukhali, Ukhiya. He was initially taken to the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Hospital in Kutupalong before being referred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital after his condition worsened.
According to BGB, personnel at the Balukhali Border Outpost (BOP), under the Ukhiya Battalion (64 BGB), heard the sound of an explosion at approximately 9:25 a.m. in the Dekubunia area inside Myanmar, about 700 metres beyond the zero line.
Preliminary information gathered by BGB indicates that Badiul Alam had crossed into Myanmar through the Noapara-Ghumdhum border area. While inside Myanmar, he reportedly stepped on a landmine believed to have been planted by an armed group, causing severe injuries to his right leg. He later returned to Bangladesh through the same route, where local residents assisted him and rushed him to the MSF hospital in Kutupalong. Due to the severity of his injuries, doctors later referred him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Mohammad Azad, Sub-Inspector and officer-in-charge of the Balukhali Police Outpost, confirmed that one person had been seriously injured in the landmine explosion. He said police are collecting further information about the incident.
Palongkhali Union Parishad Chairman M. Gafur Uddin Chowdhury also confirmed receiving reports that a local resident had been injured in a landmine explosion near the border.
Lieutenant Colonel Zahirul Islam, commanding officer of Ukhiya Battalion (64 BGB), confirmed the incident and said the injured man is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital.
Authorities are continuing to verify the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
