Dhaka, Dec 21 (V7N) – BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has questioned the role of the government in the recent unrest following the death of Inqilab Manch spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, alleging that instead of fostering democracy, the authorities are allowing mobocracy to grow.
He made the remarks at a view-exchange meeting held at a hotel in the capital on Sunday afternoon, organized on the occasion of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s return to the country.
Criticism of Government Handling
Salahuddin Ahmed said that while people are yearning for democracy, the government’s conduct suggests indulgence toward chaos.
“The mob must be strictly suppressed,” he said, adding that the situation surrounding Osman Hadi’s death raises serious questions about governance and law enforcement effectiveness.
Condemnation of Media Office Attacks
He strongly condemned the fire incidents at the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, calling them a national disgrace.
“Merely expressing regret is not enough,” he said. “Politicians are the drivers of the state, but journalists are its guides.”
Salahuddin Ahmed also questioned why law enforcement agencies arrived late during the incidents, stressing that such delays undermine public confidence.
Tarique Rahman’s Return
Referring to Tarique Rahman’s return to Bangladesh, the BNP leader said that the move is aimed at strengthening democratic institutions, not serving individual interests.
“Tarique Rahman is returning to reinforce democracy in the country,” he added.
