DHAKA, Sept 12, V7N- The BNP has decided to distribute leaflets across the country to raise public awareness and help prevent the spread of dengue.
The party will also take initiatives to repeatedly broadcast dengue awareness programmes on social media, radio and television.
BNP Acting Secretary General and Political Adviser to the Prime Minister Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced the decisions while briefing journalists after a meeting of the party's National Standing Committee tonight.
Earlier, the meeting was held at the BNP Chairman's Office in Gulshan, with BNP Chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in the chair.
Rizvi said the meeting discussed the proper implementation of measures and directives issued by the Prime Minister to prevent dengue and thanked him for his initiatives.
He said mosquito nets would be supplied to hospitals at the upazila and district levels as part of efforts to protect people from dengue. Other preventive measures and awareness programmes were also discussed.
Members of voluntary organisations, including the Girl Guides and Scouts, along with students and other volunteers, would take part in raising public awareness about dengue, Rizvi said.
"The BNP will distribute leaflets across Dhaka and the rest of the country to prevent dengue and raise public awareness. Renowned doctors and experts will prepare the leaflets," he added.
He said dengue awareness programmes would be broadcast repeatedly through social media, radio and television, while the public would also be informed about the initiatives undertaken by the government and the BNP.
Rizvi further stressed the need for proper waste disposal facilities at schools, madrasas, colleges and haat-bazaars. He said the authorities concerned had been urged to ensure appropriate arrangements for waste management and that the party would monitor the matter if necessary.
On organisational matters, Rizvi said the meeting discussed filling vacant party posts in accordance with the BNP constitution, including the possible promotion of leaders serving immediately below the vacant positions.
Replying to a question about the party council, he said the issue was not discussed at the meeting. Necessary steps would be taken under the party constitution to fill vacancies created by the deaths of leaders at district and upazila levels.
Rizvi also said an election would be held on October 29 for a parliamentary seat declared vacant following the election of the party's former secretary general and incumbent president, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
Those seeking the party nomination would be able to collect nomination forms from the BNP's Paltan office on September 15 and submit them on September 16, he said.
The National Standing Committee, which acts as the party's nomination board, would meet on the evening of September 18 to select the final candidate.
Regarding the upcoming local government elections, Rizvi said the party chairman and Prime Minister regularly held meetings with leaders from different districts and provided them with necessary guidance.
He said the local government elections would not be held on a party basis or under party symbols. However, the BNP could support individual candidates, and party leaders and supporters would be expected to work in favour of candidates backed by the party.
