JUNE 21 (V7N) - Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, stated that organizing budget debriefing sessions is a highly significant and timely initiative. Speaking at the Oath Room of the Parliament Secretariat, he noted that these sessions will strengthen parliamentary democracy by sharpening lawmakers' grasp of the national budget and public financial management. He made these remarks while opening a debriefing session organized under the “Budget Helpdesk-2026” initiative.
The Speaker pointed out that raising revenue collection, managing debt effectively, and maintaining overall macroeconomic stability are currently the biggest hurdles facing the national economy. In light of these challenges, he explained that the Budget Helpdesk serves as a crucial tool for promoting data-backed and evidence-based budget analysis. He also urged Members of Parliament (MPs) to frequently use the Parliament Library’s deep research resources to better understand state fiscal policies.
Highlighting the public's perspective, the Speaker mentioned that citizens are closely watching the actions of the current parliament, as the country’s future progress will be decided through its debates. He added that lawmakers' growing curiosity about budget issues and their active participation will yield highly positive results for the nation. Furthermore, he noted that these programs, backed by the European Union, successfully strengthen state institutions by ensuring politician accountability.
Following his speech, the Speaker officially declared the budget debriefing session open. The event was chaired by Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal, while Parliament Secretariat Secretary Barrister Md. Golam Sarwar Bhuiyan welcomed the attendees. Chief Whip Md. Nurul Islam Moni also shared his insights as the special guest during the introductory phase of the program.
During his address, Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal remarked that the current parliament, which took shape following the July Uprising, holds a unique place in history and faces immense public expectations. He described parliament as the central hub for the nation's economic and social policies. He emphasized that these specialized budget debriefings are vital stepping stones toward building a truly information-driven and transparent legislative body.
Rounding out the speeches, Chief Whip Md. Nurul Islam Moni praised the government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for delivering a realistic, forward-looking budget designed to discipline the use of limited resources. He admitted that in the past, MPs faced significant hurdles when trying to gather clear budget statistics. Thanks to the European Union's backing, the new Helpdesk initiative removes those barriers by granting lawmakers seamless access to vital data for deep budget analysis.
