DHAKA, May 31 (V7N) – Bangladesh and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) have emphasized the importance of using migration as an adaptation strategy to address climate-induced displacement and support sustainable development.

The issue was discussed during a meeting in Geneva between Bangladesh Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva Nahida Sobhan and IOM Director General Amy Pope, according to a message received here today.

During the meeting, Ambassador Nahida Sobhan congratulated Amy Pope on the successful completion of the International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) and the publication of the World Migration Report 2026.

She expressed hope that the forum and the report would strengthen global efforts to utilise migration as a driver of sustainable development, particularly for Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and climate-vulnerable nations.

The Bangladesh envoy also reaffirmed the country’s willingness to contribute to future editions of the World Migration Report by sharing Bangladesh’s experiences in addressing migration-related challenges.

The two sides also discussed ways in which IOM could further support the well-being and resilience of Rohingyas, officially referred to as Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs), as well as host communities in Bangladesh.

Both Bangladesh and IOM stressed that as climate change impacts continue to intensify globally, stronger international cooperation on migration, resilience-building and protection of human dignity has become increasingly important.
