DHAKA, May 21, (V7N) – Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said the government is taking all necessary measures to maintain law and order, ensure public safety, and meet citizens’ expectations for peace and security across Bangladesh.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Home Ministry conference room, Ahmed said law enforcement agencies are conducting continuous drives against crime, terrorism, extortion, drugs, and organized criminal activities, while also working on long-term police reforms. He noted that proactive operations based on intelligence are being intensified to prevent crimes before they occur.
The minister highlighted recent successes in Dhaka, Cox’s Bazar, Ukhiya, and Teknaf, where many listed and long-absconding accused were arrested. He cited the swift action in the rape and murder case of eight-year-old Ramisa, saying the prime accused Sohel and his wife were arrested within 24 hours, with Sohel already giving a confessional statement before the court.
Ahmed also pointed to special block raids in Mohammadpur, Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Adabar, Jatrabari, and Tejgaon, which led to the arrest of professional criminals and wanted suspects. He mentioned rapid police action in high-profile cases across Cumilla, Bogura, Kapasia, and Dhaka’s Manda area.
On broader issues, the minister said the government has formally requested the return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina through legal procedures and existing extradition mechanisms. He clarified that India’s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) are internal matters of India, but assured that Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) remains on high alert to prevent illegal infiltration.
Ahmed acknowledged that the government, only three months into office, cannot reform everything immediately but has already taken significant steps. He expressed hope that the public and media would recognize these efforts as part of the government’s commitment to justice, security, and institutional reform.
