Dhaka, April 26 (V7N) — The government has established a 13-member high-level committee to oversee the comprehensive management of Qurbani-related activities ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha. According to a gazette notification issued by the Cabinet Division and signed by Additional Secretary Md Humayun Kabir, the committee is tasked with ensuring fair pricing for animal hides, improving collection and preservation techniques, and coordinating a nationwide waste management strategy. This initiative aims to streamline the logistical challenges associated with the religious festival while protecting the economic interests of the leather sector and religious institutions.
The committee is chaired by the Commerce Minister and includes a broad spectrum of leadership, including the Ministers for Religious Affairs; Environment, Forest and Climate Change; Industries; Information and Broadcasting; Fisheries and Livestock; and Road Transport and Bridges. The State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives also joins the body along with senior secretaries from the Home, Commerce, and Industries ministries. To ensure industry-specific expertise, three prominent leaders from the leather and leather goods sector have been included as members.
A primary focus of the committee’s mandate is to regulate the raw hide market to ensure that seasonal traders and religious organizations receive fair compensation. The body is also responsible for ensuring an adequate supply of salt necessary for the immediate preservation of hides and for issuing directives to protect the proceeds intended for charitable and religious institutions. Furthermore, the committee will establish guidelines for the operation of cattle markets, the safe transportation of animals, and the strict prevention of animal cruelty during transit.
In addition to market regulation, the government is prioritizing environmental hygiene through a detailed action plan for swift waste removal. This plan covers both the Savar Leather Industrial City and residential areas across the country to prevent environmental degradation following the ritual sacrifices. By establishing these institutional arrangements well in advance of the holiday, the government seeks to maximize the national utility of leather resources while maintaining public order and sanitation throughout the festive period.
