Munshiganj, April 25 (V7N) — Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain has directed that immediate punitive measures be taken against three health officials following a surprise inspection of the 250-bed Munshiganj General Hospital. According to a PID handout released today, the Minister conducted the unannounced visit to assess the actual quality of care and administrative conduct at the facility. During the inspection, he uncovered several irregularities that prompted the disciplinary order, reiterating the government’s stance on accountability within the public health sector.
Addressing concerns regarding the current measles situation in the country, the Minister acknowledged a recent rise in severe infections among children. He explained that a significant number of children had missed their scheduled immunizations due to the failure to conduct timely measles-rubella campaigns since 2020. This lapse in the regular vaccination schedule created a vulnerability gap that health authorities are now working urgently to close through intensified medical interventions and outreach.
In response to this public health challenge, the Minister confirmed that Bangladesh has secured a substantial supply of vaccines with the assistance of international partners. With support from GAVI, UNICEF, and the World Health Organization (WHO), the country has received 2 million vials, which is equivalent to approximately 20 million doses of the vaccine. This influx of resources has allowed the government to launch a comprehensive nationwide immunization drive, which is currently being implemented in phases across all districts.
The Minister concluded his visit by emphasizing that the government remains committed to restoring the integrity of the healthcare system while ensuring that every child receives life-saving vaccinations. He noted that surveillance would be increased not only for disease outbreaks but also for the administrative performance of hospital staff nationwide. Health officials have been instructed to prioritize the ongoing vaccination campaign to prevent further measles outbreaks and to ensure that hospital resources are utilized transparently for the benefit of patients.
