FEB 12 (V7N) - Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said Thursday the party will accept the election outcome if the current trend of voting continues.
Speaking at a press conference at the party’s Dhaka-15 election office around 7 p.m., Shafiqur noted that preliminary results were emerging but cautioned against drawing conclusions too early. “We have faith in the people. Early indications are emerging, but nothing can be guaranteed. The country’s interest is our priority,” he said, adding that Jamaat appeared to be leading in many areas.
Reflecting on the party’s history, he recalled repeated bans and persecution, stating that Jamaat had endured despite challenges. He also highlighted the participation of expatriates in this election, noting their contributions to national life and pledging greater opportunities for them if Jamaat came to power.
Shafiqur praised expatriates’ role during the July movement, when they defied restrictions on remittances and protested abroad. He also expressed gratitude to journalists, acknowledging shortcomings in outreach and stressing the need for cooperation between politicians and media.
On election irregularities, he said no major incidents had occurred despite fears, and emphasized that mistakes can happen in collective efforts. Regarding rivals, Shafiqur stated: “We met with our opponent even today. One of them will win, and we will accept their victory. If I am elected, I will work together with advice from everyone. In government, we will support all parties and maintain good relations with countries we have positive ties with.”
