Dhaka, Nov 10 (V7N) — After briefly announcing a suspension, government primary school teachers have decided to resume their strike for a second day on Monday (November 10). A sit-in program is also ongoing at the central Shaheed Minar in the capital.

Mohammad Shamsuddin Masud, convener of the Primary Assistant Teachers Organization Oikya Parishad, said the strike will continue as they have not received any written assurance from the government regarding their demands. Md. Mahbubur Rahman, a leader of the Primary Teachers' Demand Implementation Council, also confirmed that the movement will continue until the three demands are fulfilled.

Meanwhile, a meeting between teacher leaders and top officials from the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education is scheduled for 5 pm at the Secretariat today.

Earlier, teachers had announced a suspension of the strike after a meeting with officials on Sunday (November 9) night, but resumed action due to the lack of a formal decision.

The protests began after police fired sound grenades, teargas shells, and rubber bullets during a ‘Pen Throwing’ program in Shahbagh on Saturday (November 8), which left several teachers injured. On Sunday, teachers observed a full-day strike in approximately 65,000 government primary schools nationwide.

The teachers’ three-point demands are:

  1. Payment of salary to assistant teachers in the 10th grade

  2. Permanent solutions to complications in higher grades

  3. Guarantee of 100% departmental promotion for assistant teachers
