Aun 02 (V7N) - Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has announced that student admissions at Thakurgaon Medical College will officially commence next year, with main construction work set to begin within the coming months.
The minister, who is also BNP Secretary General, made the remarks while inaugurating an eye camp at Thakurgaon Diabetic and Healthcare Hospital on Sunday, held with assistance from Nepal.
"Since the majority of people in our region are poor, it is not possible for many to travel to Dhaka for treatment. The government is working sincerely to bring modern healthcare to the doorsteps of ordinary and marginalized people," he said.
He noted that the eye camp, organized through bilateral discussions with the Nepalese government, would improve eye care services in the area, and added that the government would consider expanding such camps to every upazila of the district in phases.
Mirza Fakhrul also mentioned that the 250-bed Thakurgaon General Hospital has already been upgraded to 600 beds as part of efforts to enhance healthcare quality and accessibility.
Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of Nepal, Mr. Pratik Karki, attended as guest of honour and highlighted the strong historical ties between Nepal and Bangladesh, emphasizing that the relationship extends beyond governments to the people, encompassing friendship and mutual cooperation in agriculture, trade, healthcare, culture, and other fields.
The event was also attended by Mr. Padma Narayan Chowdhury, Chairman of Biratnagar Eye Hospital, Nepal; Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Rafiqul Haque; Superintendent of Police Belal Hossain; and District BNP President Mirza Faisal Amin, among others.
