JHALOKATHI, Aug 21 (V7N) — Police have detained two women at the Jhalokathi regional passport office after one allegedly applied for a passport using a Bangladeshi identity, while the other was accused of assisting her.

The incident occurred at around noon on Thursday (Aug 20). The women were identified as Rumi Akter, 21, and Jafrin Akter Eka, 24, who claimed to be residents of Chattogram and Barishal respectively.

Passport officials became suspicious after finding inconsistencies in Rumi’s identity and submitted documents during the verification process. The matter was subsequently reported to police, who also detained Jafrin for allegedly assisting her in obtaining the passport.

Assistant Director of the Jhalokathi Regional Passport Office Shafiullah said discrepancies were found during the verification of Rumi’s documents, prompting officials to alert police.

Jhalokathi Sadar Police Station Sub-Inspector Milon Mallik said both women were taken to the police station for further questioning and verification.

Police said their identities, citizenship and submitted documents were being thoroughly examined. Legal action will be taken if the allegations are substantiated.
