JHALOKATHI, May 21, (V7N)– The Kathalia upazila administration, in a joint drive with the Fisheries Department, arrested three fishermen for illegally catching Renupona fish with mosquito nets in the Bishkhali River.
During the operation, officials seized one mosquito net and recovered about 5,000 pieces of Renupona of different species. Later, Upazila Executive Officer and Executive Magistrate Md. Makbul Hossain conducted a mobile court, fining the fishermen Tk 3,000 in total. The seized fish fry were released back into the river. Upazila Fisheries Officer Nahida Akhtar and other officials were present. Authorities said such drives will continue to protect biodiversity and natural fish reproduction.
Meanwhile, Rajapur Sadar Union Parishad secured first place in Jhalakathi district for resolving village court cases. From October 2025 to March 2026, the union filed 40 cases—exceeding the government’s target of 30—and settled 31, the highest in the district. At a coordination meeting on May 13, the Union Parishad was recognized, with an award presented to Md. Masud Hawlader, Account Assistant cum Computer Operator. Locals said quick, low-cost dispute resolution through village courts is benefiting ordinary people.
In Kathalia, training on sacrificial animal slaughter and skin preservation was held at the Upazila Parishad meeting room. Upazila Executive Officer Md. Maqbul Hossain was chief guest, while Animal Husbandry Officer Dr. Md. Jamshed Azad presided. Imams, teachers, butchers, journalists, and officials attended, including Police Station OC Md. Jasim Uddin, Government Pilot High School Headmaster Md. Mujibur Rahman, and local imams.
