RANGAMATI, May 3, (V7N) — A fresh political storm erupted in Rangamati as a section of Bangladesh Nationalist Chhatra Dal (BNCD) leaders and activists rejected the newly announced district committee after eight years, staging intense protests that disrupted city life.

Within hours of the midnight announcement of the new committee, aggrieved activists took to the streets, alleging that a “pocket committee” had been formed undemocratically and through financial transactions. On Sunday noon, protesters blocked the Rangamati–Chittagong road near Kathaltoli, burning tires and chanting slogans against the central leadership. The blockade caused severe inconvenience to students, commuters, and tourists.

Additional police were deployed at key intersections to prevent escalation. Around 1 pm, BNP district vice‑president Saiful Islam Panir and general secretary Advocate Mamunur Rashid Mamun attempted to pacify the protesters but failed initially. Later, BNP district leaders contacted central Chhatra Dal president Rakib, who assured reconsideration of the committee.

By 2:15 pm, protesters lifted the blockade after district BNP leaders promised to implement their demands within 24 hours. However, they warned of stricter programs, including strikes, if the committee is not dissolved and reformed.

The sudden blockade disrupted traffic and daily life across Rangamati, though no clashes were reported. The incident highlights the fragility of student politics and the challenges of maintaining unity within the BNP’s student wing.
