COX’S BAZAR, May 3, (V7N) — A series of tragic incidents have shaken Cox’s Bazar, ranging from suspected measles death in a Rohingya camp to a shooting in Teknaf and a fatal lightning strike.

A 9‑month‑old Rohingya child died Saturday evening at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital after being admitted with fever, cough, pneumonia, and suspected measles symptoms. Hospital RMO Dr. Shantanu Ghosh confirmed the death, noting that samples were sent to Dhaka for testing. The child’s father is a resident of Ukhia Rohingya camp. This is the first reported death of a Rohingya child with measles‑like symptoms, though confirmation awaits lab results.

In Baharchhara union, 19‑year‑old Shahid Ullah, son of Sona Mia, was shot Saturday night near Noakhalipara bridge. Family members allege an attempted kidnapping by a man named Syed Amin, who shot Shahid during a struggle. Locals, however, reported that an unidentified assailant fired from behind. Shahid was first treated at Teknaf Upazila Health Complex before being transferred to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital. Police said the case is under investigation.

Earlier Saturday afternoon, Md. Sarwar Alam (salt farmer, 35) of Kharangkhali Notun Para, Hoaikyong union, died after being struck by lightning while returning from fishing in the Naf River. Witnesses said he collapsed after a thunderclap. Doctors at Hnila Healthcare Diagnostic Center declared him dead upon arrival. Police confirmed the incident as a lightning‑related fatality.
