RANGAMATI, April 29 (V7N) — Waste management in Rangamati city has collapsed after locals blocked dumping operations, leaving garbage piled up across roads, markets, and residential areas.

Since Wednesday morning, municipal workers have stopped collecting waste after residents of the radio station area, where the dumping site is located, prevented disposal. Locals staged a human chain Tuesday demanding relocation of the dumping station, citing years of stench, pollution, and health hazards.

With no collection, garbage has accumulated citywide, creating severe discomfort and health risks. Residents complain of unbearable stench, while tourists entering the city face embarrassment at the sight of waste.

Municipal officials said service workers are being attacked when attempting to dump waste, making collection impossible. They warned that waste could spill into Kaptai Lake, especially during the rainy season. A plan to trap waste with iron nets was abandoned due to engineering negligence.

Locals insist the crisis will worsen unless alternative dumping stations are established and modern waste management introduced. They fear the situation is already harming Rangamati’s tourism industry, which depends on a clean environment.
