Mongla, Feb 18 (V7N) — Mongla Port, Bangladesh’s second largest seaport, has recorded a significant increase in shipping and container handling during the first seven months of the 2025-26 fiscal year.
According to Md. Makruzzaman, Senior Deputy Manager of Mongla Port Authority, 31 foreign commercial container ships arrived at the port, handling a total of 21,651 TEU containers—a 79.19% increase compared to 21,456 TEU handled during the same period in the 2024-25 fiscal year.
A total of 515 foreign commercial ships docked at Mongla Port from July 2025 to January 2026. During this period, 6,404 reconditioned vehicles were imported, and total cargo handling reached 8.266 million metric tons, marking a 25.03% increase from the previous year.
Makruzzaman expressed optimism about the future, saying, “With the BNP-led government now in office after the 13th National Parliament election, we hope that import and export activities will further increase, and Mongla Port will continue to play a vital role in the national economy.”
He also noted that three new operational anchor berths have been declared in the Hiron Point area to facilitate port users. On an experimental basis, cargo operations on 16 commercial ships with a 9.00-meter draft were successfully completed. These berths can now handle commercial ships up to 200 meters in length and 9.00 meters draft.
Currently, essential goods such as food grains, cement, clinker, fertilizer, automobiles, machinery, rice, wheat, coal, oil, stone, corn, oilseeds, and LPG are imported through Mongla Port. Exports include white fish, shrimp, jute and jute products, frozen food, crab, clay tiles, silk fabrics, and general cargo.
This record growth highlights Mongla Port’s increasing strategic importance in Bangladesh’s import-export trade and overall economic development.
