Bagerhat, Nov 23 (V7N) – BNP leader and nomination aspirant for the Bagerhat-4 (Morelganj–Sharankhola) constituency, Monirul Haque Farazi, has said that journalists play a vital role in highlighting social decay, corruption, and public issues, which is why newspapers are regarded as the mirror of society. He made the remarks during an exchange meeting with journalists at the Morelganj Press Club on Saturday at 8 p.m.
Farazi stated that journalists have the power to contribute significantly to social transformation. He alleged that during the past 17 years of the Awami League government, political influence led to direct interference in media freedom across the country.
The meeting was chaired by Press Club President H. M. Moinul Islam. Speakers included Press Club General Secretary Ganesh Pal, former president Mehedi Hasan Lipon, Mashiur Rahman Masum, Vice President Jamal Hossain Bappa, former General Secretary Fazlul Haque Khokon, Hemayet Hossain Himu, former Assistant General Secretary and Daily Purboanchal correspondent M. Palash Sharif, and Finance and Office Secretary Shefali Akter Rakhi. Other journalists including Assistant General Secretary Shahjahan Ali Khan, club members Mahbubur Rahman and Mizanur Rahman were also present.
Farazi, a prominent social worker and senior BNP leader, said that journalists are the conscience of the nation who give voice to the oppressed and disenfranchised. He alleged that under the previous “fascist government,” political power was used to illegally seize land belonging to the press club — an incident he described as deeply unfortunate. He added that he himself faced multiple cases, attacks, and imprisonment during the previous regime.
Calling for unity, Farazi urged all party activists and supporters to move beyond divisions and collectively ensure a sweeping victory for the BNP’s paddy-sheaf symbol under the leadership of Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. Several BNP leaders and activists were present alongside the chief guest at the event.
