Dhaka, Oct 15 (V7N)- Shipping Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam has said that five of the world’s leading companies have been involved in container management at Chattogram Port as part of efforts to modernise the country’s maritime sector.
He made the remarks while speaking at the Bangladesh International Maritime and Offshore Exhibition (BIMOX) at a convention centre in the capital on Thursday.
The minister said modernisation work was underway at Chattogram Port, adding that Payra Deep Sea Port and Matarbari Port were also expected to become operational soon.
Highlighting the country’s potential in inland water transport, Sheikh Rabiul Alam said Bangladesh has around 16,000 kilometres of waterways, but the network remains underutilised.
He also stressed the importance of adopting modern technology for deep-sea fishing and oil and gas exploration to make better use of the country’s maritime resources.
