Madaripur, July 25 (V7N) — In a pre-dawn raid on Friday, a joint operation led by the Bangladesh Army and Madaripur Sadar Model Police resulted in the arrest of six individuals — including three women — and the seizure of a large cache of illegal firearms from the village of Ghunsi in Shirakha Union under Madaripur Sadar Upazila.
The detained individuals have been identified as Kalam Matubbar (53), son of Shah Alam Matubbar; Milon Matubbar (54), son of the late Abdul Karim Matubbar; Monu Matubbar (50), another son of Shah Alam Matubbar; Lucky Begum (45), wife of Kalam Matubbar; Parul Begum (45), wife of Mofiz Matubbar; and Khadija Akhter (23), wife of Shihab Matubbar — all residents of Ghunsi village.
At a press briefing held later in the day, Major Kazi Faisal Faruq, Commander of the Madaripur Army Camp, stated that the joint forces launched the operation based on intelligence reports indicating stockpiling of local and foreign firearms in several residential houses in the village.
During the search operation, law enforcement recovered the following:
One pistol, One air gun, One sawed-off rifle, One magazine, and 125 rounds of ammunition.
A large number of locally-made weapons
Additionally, five mobile phones and a laptop were seized as part of the investigation. The six arrested suspects were later handed over to Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station for legal processing.
The army has indicated that the recovered weapons were likely being used for criminal purposes in the region. Major Faisal Faruq confirmed that such coordinated operations will continue to suppress illegal arms networks and ensure public safety.
The discovery highlights ongoing concerns about the proliferation of both locally manufactured and foreign firearms in rural Bangladesh, often linked to organized crime, land disputes, and local terror activities.
