Sylhet, May 23 (V7N) — A member of Bangladesh’s Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-9) was killed after being attacked by suspected muggers in the Queen Bridge area of Sylhet city on Friday afternoon, officials said.
The deceased was identified as Imon Acharyya, a dedicated member of RAB-9 who had been serving in Sylhet for a long period with professionalism and commitment.
According to RAB-9 officials and hospital sources, the incident took place around 12:00 pm while Imon Acharyya was performing his official duties near the Queen Bridge point. At that time, a group of organized muggers, who had reportedly been lying in wait, launched a sudden attack on him using sharp weapons.
He sustained critical injuries and heavy bleeding during the assault. Fellow personnel and locals quickly rescued him and rushed him to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Hospital authorities said he was initially treated at the emergency department before being transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU-2), where he was placed on life support. Despite extensive efforts by doctors, he succumbed to his injuries due to the severity of the attack. The on-duty physician declared him dead at approximately 1:30 pm.
Following the incident, Kotwali Police Station personnel conducted an immediate operation and detained the suspected attacker involved in the killing. The suspect was later taken into police custody for further legal proceedings.
Law enforcement authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, while efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest any additional individuals connected to the attack.
