Dhaka, Oct 08 (V7N) – The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has taken cognizance of formal charges against four individuals, including Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officer Lieutenant Colonel Redoanul Islam, in a case concerning crimes against humanity over the killing of 28 people in the capital’s Rampura area during the July–August uprising last year. The tribunal has also issued arrest warrants for the accused.
The formal charges were submitted to the Tribunal-1 Registrar on Wednesday (October 8) by Prosecutor Faruk Ahmed on behalf of the prosecution. Following submission, the three-member tribunal, headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Majumdar, took cognizance of the case and ordered the arrest of the accused.
According to the case documents, 28 protesters were killed on July 24 in Rampura during the mass uprising. Video footage and eyewitness accounts reportedly showed BGB officer Redoanul Islam firing directly at demonstrators.
The other accused are Rafat Bin Alam Monu, Rashedul Islam, and Mashiur Rahman — all of whom are also facing charges of murder, torture, and persecution as crimes against humanity.
Multiple complaints have been lodged alleging that during the July–August 2024 movement, the then Awami League government, along with party cadres and a section of law enforcement agencies, committed genocide and other crimes against humanity while attempting to suppress student and public protests.
Currently, two international crimes tribunals are conducting trials related to these alleged atrocities.
