Dhaka, Sep 28 (V7N) – The final witness testimony in the case against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and three others over crimes against humanity during the July–August student uprising will begin today.
At 11:30 am on Sunday, the deposition of the investigating officer — the 54th witness — along with portions of the seized video exhibition, will be broadcast live from International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1), headed by Justice Golam Mortuza Majumder.
Earlier, many bereaved families, including the father of martyr Abu Sayeed, one of the central symbols of the uprising, testified in this historic case. Nahid Islam, convener of the NCP and leader of the July Movement, and Dr. Mahmudur Rahman, editor of Amar Desh, also gave testimony as key witnesses.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam, along with prosecutors Mizanul Islam and Gazi SH Tamim, is leading the case for the prosecution. State-appointed lawyer Amir Hossain is defending Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, while Zayed Bin Amjad represents former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who turned approver and testified as a public witness after pleading guilty.
The tribunal had framed charges against Sheikh Hasina, Kamal, and Al-Mamun on July 10, formally opening the trial. Al-Mamun’s testimony as a cooperating witness was seen as a major turning point in the case.
In addition to this trial, Sheikh Hasina faces two other cases before the tribunal: one for enforced disappearances and killings during her party’s 15-and-a-half-year rule, and another linked to the Hefazat-e-Islam rally massacre at Shapla Square, Motijheel.
The tribunal proceedings are part of broader accountability efforts following allegations that the Awami League government, its party cadres, and sections of law enforcement committed genocide and crimes against humanity while suppressing last year’s student and public uprising.
