Dhaka, Jun 05 (V7N)- Today, June 5, marks World Environment Day, which is being observed across Bangladesh and around the world through various programs aimed at raising awareness about environmental protection and addressing the growing risks of climate change.
The theme for this year's observance is “Climate Change: Action Today, Security Tomorrow.”
Celebrated in more than 150 countries, World Environment Day is recognized as the United Nations' largest global platform for environmental awareness and action.
Environmental experts have warned that Bangladesh remains one of the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Rising sea levels, increasing salinity, river erosion, floods, droughts, and frequent natural disasters continue to pose serious threats to the country's environment, agriculture, and public life. In addition, plastic and polythene pollution, worsening air quality, and unplanned urbanization are intensifying environmental challenges.
Experts stress that a safe and sustainable future can only be ensured through coordinated efforts by individuals, communities, and the government to protect nature and preserve ecological balance.
In a message marking the occasion, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman said the government is implementing a range of initiatives to strengthen environmental protection, enhance climate resilience, and promote sustainable development. He announced several long-term programs, including the plantation of 250 million trees over the next five years, excavation and re-excavation of 20,000 kilometers of canals nationwide, expansion of renewable energy use, promotion of green industrialization, eco-friendly urban development, and improved waste management systems.
President Md. Sahabuddin, in a separate message, emphasized that no single institution can effectively address the climate and environmental crisis alone. He said ensuring a safe and sustainable environment for future generations requires active participation from government agencies, the private sector, researchers, civil society, and the general public. He called on all stakeholders to work together to build a greener, safer, and more sustainable Bangladesh through collective responsibility, effective action, and widespread public awareness.
The foundation of global environmental initiatives was laid during the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972. Following that conference, the United Nations designated June 5 as World Environment Day, which has been officially observed worldwide since 1973.
