Dhaka, Sept 8 (V7N) – Intelligence sources have raised alarms over a growing number of illegal battery-powered rickshaws operating across Dhaka, with concerns that they may be used to incite public disorder. Following the nationwide mass uprising in July, reports suggest that individuals affiliated with banned groups, including the Awami League-backed Rickshaw Drivers’ League and Workers’ League, are being deployed in the capital under the guise of battery-powered rickshaw drivers.

According to the intelligence report, activists from various districts are allegedly being brought into Dhaka to create disturbances on city streets, potentially engaging in criminal activities under the cover of transport operations. The sources also warn that this could be part of a wider effort to destabilize public order.

Authorities have observed that nearly 800,000 battery-powered rickshaws now operate without proper licenses across the country. The rapid, unchecked growth of these vehicles is causing serious traffic congestion, safety hazards, and challenges for law enforcement in monitoring the flow of transport. Many operators disregard traffic regulations and legal requirements, heightening the risk of accidents and street chaos.

The government and law enforcement agencies are reportedly planning stricter monitoring and enforcement measures. Officials stress the importance of verifying driver credentials, ensuring vehicle compliance with safety standards, and restricting unauthorized operations to prevent potential misuse.

Public safety experts have also urged citizens to report unlicensed vehicles to local authorities and avoid participation in street disturbances orchestrated through such illegal transport networks.

The situation highlights broader concerns about urban transport management, regulatory enforcement, and political exploitation of informal transport networks in Dhaka.
