Rangamati, Oct 26 (V7N)- A road blockade in Sajek, Rangamati, entered its fifth consecutive day on Monday, disrupting transport and tourism activities and leaving local businesses uncertain about when normal operations will resume.

Protesters blocked roads and burned tyres at several locations in Sajek on Monday morning as part of a programme called by the Sajek People's Rights Protection Committee and the Sajek Traders Association.

The indefinite blockade began on October 22 and has disrupted road communication with Sajek, as well as routes connecting Baghaihat and Dighinala. The closure of the tourist destination has also affected tourism-related businesses and traders who depend on visitors.

The protesters are pursuing five demands in the third phase of their programme, including the removal of armed members of the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) from the Sajek area. They are also demanding compensation for people affected by an attack and proper medical treatment for those injured.

Meanwhile, army and police patrols have been strengthened in the area to prevent clashes and maintain security.

A government delegation, including two members of parliament, has arrived in Uzobazar in Sajek to hold discussions with the protesters and seek a resolution to the crisis. The delegation also includes representatives of local headmen and business communities.

The blockade is continuing as negotiations are expected to focus on the protesters' demands and the restoration of normal transport and tourism activities in the area.
