Dhaka, Sep 11 (V7N)- The current government is reviewing 101 agreements signed with India during the tenure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to determine whether any provisions conflict with Bangladesh’s national interests, Chief Whip of Parliament Nurul Islam Moni has said.
He made the remarks at a press conference on Friday (September 11) following the conclusion of the third session of the National Parliament.
Moni said the government wants to maintain friendly relations with neighboring India but will give priority to Bangladesh’s national interests. Friendship between the two countries will continue, he said, but it cannot come at the expense of the country’s interests.
Referring to agreements signed by the previous government, the Chief Whip cited an arrangement under which a vessel belonging to a friendly country could receive priority for unloading at Chittagong Port if it arrived at the same time as a Bangladeshi vessel.
He said the government is examining such agreements and taking steps to withdraw from provisions that it considers contrary to Bangladesh’s interests.
Moni reiterated that Bangladesh wants to preserve its friendship with India while ensuring that national interests remain protected.
On opposition to the Property Transfer Act on the grounds of Sharia law, the Chief Whip said those opposing the legislation could potentially oppose other laws as well if they considered it politically advantageous.
Addressing the fertilizer situation, Moni said there is currently no shortage of fertilizer in the country and that adequate stocks are available. However, he acknowledged that there may be weaknesses in the management and distribution of fertilizer.
He also said the law aimed at preventing enforced disappearances has been strengthened compared with the past.
Meanwhile, Moni expressed dissatisfaction over the Prime Minister not being invited to the BRICS summit. He criticized India for not inviting the prime minister of an independent country, describing the decision as a matter of concern.
