Dhaka, Jul 06 (V7N) — Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is leading the government with a long-term vision for Bangladesh's development, with rural development being one of its highest priorities.

He made the remarks on Monday while addressing a discussion meeting at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium marking National Rural Development Day 2026.

The minister said the government is committed to improving the socio-economic conditions of rural communities through sustainable development initiatives.

Criticizing the previous administration, he alleged that it carried out incomplete development projects while misappropriating public funds.

"The previous fascist government completed only half of the development work and put the rest into their own pockets. They caused immense damage by destroying public trust and confidence. We are working to rebuild that trust," he said.

Emphasizing self-reliance, Mirza Fakhrul said Bangladesh must take responsibility for its own development.

"If we want real change, we must take our own initiatives. No neighbouring country or the United States will come and build our nation for us," he said.

The minister also revealed that discussions are underway to reintroduce a village government system, saying such a structure would help nurture grassroots leadership and strengthen local governance.

Highlighting the importance of integrity, he called for a firm stand against corruption.

"We must say an absolute no to corruption. We do not want to see anyone depriving others of their rights. If I correct myself first, I can help correct others," he added.
