Dhaka, Jul 06 (V7N) — Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Machud has said preparations are underway to hold local government elections in October, adding that all outstanding issues will be finalized soon following discussions with the government.

He made the remarks while speaking at a programme organized by the Reporters Forum for Elections and Democracy (RFED) at the Election Commission Secretariat on Monday afternoon.

The election commissioner sought the cooperation of the media in ensuring free, fair and credible elections, saying the Election Commission faces various challenges in carrying out its responsibilities.

Machud said local government administration is currently being managed through administrators at the city corporation level and indicated that the election process is likely to begin with Union Parishad and municipality polls.

Speaking at the same event, Election Commissioner Sanaullah said the Commission is committed to holding local government elections with the same level of fairness and transparency as the national parliamentary elections.

He said the Election Commission will send a letter to the government seeking completion of the election code of conduct and the delimitation of electoral boundaries to facilitate the polls.

According to the commissioners, the Election Commission is working to ensure that the upcoming local government elections are conducted in a free, fair and orderly manner.
