NEW YORK, Jun 18 (V7N) – Bangladesh has called for enhanced humanitarian assistance, stronger protection of civilians, and greater participation of women in peacebuilding efforts amid growing humanitarian crises across the world.

Speaking at the 2026 Humanitarian Affairs Segment of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in New York on Wednesday, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid Islam reaffirmed Bangladesh's commitment to humanitarian principles and international solidarity.

The State Minister said Bangladesh, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is continuing efforts to expand social protection programs, strengthen disaster preparedness, empower women, and support vulnerable communities.

Addressing the gathering, she emphasized the importance of coordinated global action to address humanitarian challenges and ensure that no vulnerable population is left behind.

Later the same day, while participating in the United Nations Security Council's Open Debate on Women, Peace and Security (WPS), Shama Obaid Islam highlighted the crucial role of women in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and post-conflict recovery.

She praised the professionalism, leadership, and contributions of Bangladeshi women peacekeepers serving in United Nations peacekeeping missions around the world and called for greater meaningful participation of women in peace and security processes at all levels.

The State Minister also expressed deep concern over the growing suffering of women and children in conflict-affected regions worldwide. She urged the international community to address the widening humanitarian funding gap, warning that inadequate resources could undermine relief efforts and support for affected populations.

Highlighting one of Bangladesh's key humanitarian concerns, she reiterated the need for sustained international cooperation to achieve a durable solution to the Rohingya crisis. She called for the safe, voluntary, dignified, and early repatriation of Rohingya refugees to their homeland in Myanmar.

As part of her ongoing engagements at the United Nations, the State Minister is scheduled to participate in the High-Level Panel Discussion-2 of the ECOSOC Humanitarian Affairs Segment on Thursday.

She will also lead the Bangladesh delegation in a bilateral meeting with UN Women Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director Sima Bahous at the UN Headquarters to discuss issues related to women's empowerment, gender equality, and international cooperation.

Bangladesh's interventions at the United Nations reflect the country's continued advocacy for humanitarian action, inclusive peacebuilding, and sustainable solutions to global displacement and conflict-related challenges.
