Dhaka, Jun 11 (V7N) – Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said the government has prepared the national budget with the goal of providing relief to people across the country despite limited financial resources.
Speaking to reporters at the National Parliament on Thursday (June 11) before presenting the budget, the finance minister said public expectations from the first budget of the elected government are very high.
He noted that citizens expect the benefits of economic growth to reach all segments of society and emphasized that the government is working to steer the economy from its current fragile state toward a path of sustainable prosperity.
Later in the afternoon, the finance minister is scheduled to present the proposed budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in the National Parliament. The proposed budget size is Tk 9.38 trillion, making it the first budget of the new government.
According to government officials, expenditure has increased due to several factors, including efforts to address global economic risks, expanded subsidy and social safety net programs, rising interest payment obligations, and the implementation of recommendations under the proposed new salary structure for government employees.
While the budget places priority on economic recovery, investment promotion and employment generation, it also faces the challenge of a record deficit of approximately Tk 2.43 trillion.
The government has set a target of reducing inflation to 7.5 percent in the next fiscal year, while aiming to achieve an estimated GDP growth rate of 6.5 percent.
The budget is expected to outline the government's economic strategy for maintaining stability, boosting investment and supporting vulnerable sections of society amid ongoing domestic and global economic challenges.
