Dhaka, Apr 19 (V7N) — The ongoing fuel shortage in Bangladesh has continued to worsen even after the government increased fuel prices, leaving consumers across the country facing long queues and severe inconvenience at petrol stations.
Motorists reported waiting for hours at filling stations on Sunday (April 19), but many still could not secure the fuel they needed.
Severe shortage in multiple regions
The crisis is reported to be most severe in the Rangpur Division, where several rural filling stations have been temporarily shut down due to supply shortages. Diesel shortages are particularly acute, affecting agriculture and transport operations.
Similar disruptions have also been reported in the Rajshahi Division, Chattogram Division, Khulna Division, and Mymensingh Division.
Fuel station owners say the crisis stems from irregular supply from depots, making it impossible to meet consumer demand.
Price hike adds to public frustration
The recent increase in fuel prices has further heightened public anxiety. Many consumers fear that transport fares, agricultural production costs, and essential commodity prices will rise sharply in the coming days.
New official prices include increased rates for diesel, petrol, octane, and kerosene, with hikes ranging between Tk 15 and Tk 20 per liter.
Allegations of pricing violations
In Satkhira District, some filling stations have been accused of selling fuel at new prices despite government instructions to sell existing stock at old rates.
Local administration officials stated that 29 stations in the district hold significant fuel reserves and should follow pricing guidelines. However, some station operators claimed they did not receive clear directives.
Regional impact
In Kurigram District, residents expressed concern that the combined effect of shortage and price increases is worsening living conditions in an already economically vulnerable region.
Meanwhile, in Chattogram, long queues continue at multiple petrol pumps, with drivers reporting waiting since early morning without success.
Public suffering continues
Across the country, the fuel crisis has created widespread disruption in transport, agriculture, and daily life. Authorities have yet to announce a clear timeline for restoring normal fuel distribution.
