Guwahati, Oct 27 (V7N)- At least five people have been killed and another critically injured in a shooting at a hotel in Guwahati, the capital of India’s northeastern state of Assam, NDTV has reported.

The incident took place on Monday night, October 26, at Hotel Bilas Inn in the Borah Service area of the city.

According to police, the shooting allegedly stemmed from a dispute between the hotel owner and the person who had leased the property. The accused, identified as Ghanakanta Gogoi, the hotel’s lessee, has been arrested.

The deceased have been identified as hotel owner Helena Bharali; her son, Debarshi Kashyap; her daughter-in-law, Riniki Kashyap; a relative, Narayan Das; and Helena’s brother, Bhudev Bharali.

Another relative, Satyendra Pathak, sustained gunshot injuries and is receiving treatment at Guwahati Medical College.

The Guwahati Police Commissioner said a legally registered .32-bore pistol was recovered from the scene. According to the police, all the victims were associated with the hotel owner, and the lessee allegedly carried out the shooting.

Preliminary investigations suggest that a dispute over the hotel’s lease agreement may have been the motive behind the attack. Police are continuing their investigation and interrogating the accused.

Meanwhile, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi expressed condolences to the bereaved families in a social media post. He also raised concerns over public safety and the law-and-order situation in the state.

Gogoi called on Assam Chief Minister and Home Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to pay greater attention to crime and take responsibility for addressing the situation.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
