Washington, Jun 27 (V7N) – U.S. President Donald Trump has said Iran still possesses some military capability but claimed its ability to pose a significant threat has been greatly diminished following recent American military operations.
Speaking at an event organized by the Faith and Freedom Coalition on Friday, Trump said the United States remains engaged in a confrontation with Iran despite recent diplomatic efforts in the region.
"We are still in a fight with Iran. They have some capability, but it's not much. They can't win anything. But they can still attack," Trump told the audience.
Referring to a recent incident in the Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. president said Iran had launched a drone attack on a cargo vessel.
"They attacked a large ship in Hormuz. They fired four drones. We destroyed three of them. Another one caused some damage to the ship," he said.
Trump's remarks referred to Thursday's reported attack on a commercial vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategically important maritime routes.
In response to the incident, the U.S. military carried out strikes against multiple Iranian military targets on Friday.
According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation targeted missile and drone storage facilities as well as coastal radar installations, describing the strikes as part of efforts to reduce Iran's ability to conduct further attacks in the region.
The latest exchange of military action comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, where concerns remain over the security of international shipping routes and the risk of further escalation despite ongoing diplomatic initiatives.
