Rangamati, Aug 18 (V7N) — A 12-year-old Class Five student was killed in an attack allegedly carried out by a 22-year-old neighbour in Rangamati Sadar Upazila on Monday afternoon. Police have arrested the suspected assailant.
The deceased, Rupun Chakma, was the son of Lakkhya Chakma of Bhaibonchhara Para in Bhaijjatali Mouza under Kaptai Union. He had been staying at his maternal uncle Asheni Kumar Chakma’s home in Headman Para of Jibtali Union for his studies, according to local sources.
Police and residents said Rupun went to collect water near a neighbour’s house at around 5pm. The suspect, identified as Swapan Chakma, was reportedly there at the time.
According to the preliminary account, Swapan took the child into a room, where Rupun was attacked with a sharp weapon. He sustained serious injuries and died at the scene.
After receiving information about the incident, a team led by Rangamati Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Jasim Uddin went to the scene.
Police later conducted an operation and arrested Swapan Chakma, son of Rimlal Chakma, at around 10pm.
The police officer said an initial examination of the body was conducted at the scene before it was sent to Rangamati General Hospital for autopsy.
Dr Shawkat Akbar Khan, resident medical officer at Rangamati General Hospital, confirmed that the body of a child had been brought to the hospital for post-mortem examination.
The killing has sparked grief and anger among local residents, who have called for exemplary punishment if the suspect is found guilty.
Police said legal proceedings against the arrested suspect are underway.
