Washington, Jun 05 (V7N)- Amid the ongoing conflict with Iran, US President Donald Trump has suffered a significant political setback after the House of Representatives approved a resolution aimed at limiting his authority to initiate new military action against Iran without congressional approval.

According to Reuters, the Democratic-led measure passed the House on Wednesday by a narrow 215-208 vote. Notably, four Republican lawmakers—Tom Barrett, Warren Davidson, Brian Fitzpatrick, and Thomas Massie—joined Democrats in supporting the resolution, marking a rare bipartisan challenge to Trump’s foreign policy.

Under the proposed measure, the president would be prohibited from launching new military operations or deploying additional US troops to Iran without authorization from Congress. Analysts view the vote as a symbolic but important rebuke of the administration’s war strategy.

Representative Gregory Meeks, who sponsored the resolution, described its passage as a turning point, saying an increasing number of Republicans recognize that American voters do not support another prolonged military conflict in the Middle East.

However, the resolution faces significant hurdles before becoming law. It must still pass the Republican-controlled Senate, and even if approved there, President Trump could veto it. Overriding a presidential veto would require a two-thirds majority in both chambers of Congress, a threshold considered difficult to achieve under current political conditions.

Despite its uncertain future, political observers say the vote increases pressure on the White House to seek an end to hostilities with Iran, particularly as fuel prices continue to rise and public opposition to the conflict grows.

This marks the fourth attempt by the House of Representatives to restrict Trump's war-related powers.

President Trump strongly criticized the move, calling it “treasonous” and “meaningless.” In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, he accused the four Republican lawmakers and House Democrats of undermining his efforts while he was engaged in negotiations aimed at ending the conflict with Iran. The White House also dismissed the resolution, arguing that it is unconstitutional.

Rubio Announces End of ‘Operation Epic Fury’

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told lawmakers during a congressional hearing that Washington’s offensive military campaign against Iran, known as “Operation Epic Fury,” has officially concluded.

Compensation Dispute Remains Key Obstacle

According to CNN, President Trump remains optimistic that a positive agreement with Iran could be reached by the end of the week. However, negotiations continue to face a major obstacle over financial issues, including Iran’s demand for the release of blocked assets and broader compensation-related concerns.

Diplomatic efforts are continuing, but officials acknowledge that significant differences remain before any final agreement can be reached.
