Washington, May 17 (V7N) — The United States and Israel are reportedly preparing for a possible new military operation against Iran as ongoing peace negotiations remain stalled, according to a report published by The New York Times.
Citing two US officials involved in Middle East affairs, the report said preparations are underway for a stronger military offensive that could begin as early as next week. However, no final decision has yet been approved by US President Donald Trump.
Earlier, Iran and the United States had agreed to a temporary ceasefire to facilitate peace talks held in Islamabad, Pakistan. Although senior representatives from both countries participated in the discussions, negotiations reportedly failed to produce an agreement due to major differences over conditions and demands.
As diplomatic efforts remain deadlocked, Washington and Tel Aviv are now considering broader military options. According to the report, discussions include potential strikes on Iranian infrastructure, military facilities and strategic sites near the Strait of Hormuz.
The report also stated that plans under consideration may include operations targeting key oil export hubs such as Kharg Island in the Persian Gulf. In addition, sensitive missions involving special forces to recover components linked to Iran’s nuclear facilities are reportedly being evaluated.
Security analysts, however, have warned that any attempt to seize or remove highly enriched uranium could carry major risks, including the possibility of significant casualties if Iranian ground forces resist military intervention.
Meanwhile, Israeli television channel Channel 12, citing a senior Israeli official, reported that Tel Aviv is preparing for the possibility of a prolonged conflict. According to the report, Israeli authorities are now awaiting the final decision from the White House regarding the next phase of action.
