Chennai, May 08 (V7N) — The political situation in Tamil Nadu has taken a dramatic turn as actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay and his party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) warned that all of its legislators could resign if rival parties attempt to form what it described as an “immoral government.”

The warning was issued by TVK on Thursday evening amid continuing uncertainty over the formation of the next government in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.

Earlier, Vijay met Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Wednesday and requested an opportunity to form the government. However, the governor reportedly did not provide any assurance to the TVK chief.

No party or alliance has secured the required 118 seats needed for a majority in the assembly.

TVK emerged as the single largest party in the election by winning 108 seats. However, since Vijay himself won two constituencies, the party’s effective strength in the assembly currently stands at 107 MLAs.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-Congress-Left alliance secured 74 seats, while the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-BJP alliance won 53 seats.

DMK won 59 seats on its own, although party chief and outgoing Chief Minister M. K. Stalin lost his constituency. Its ally Indian National Congress won five seats.

On the other hand, former Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami’s AIADMK secured 47 seats, while its ally Bharatiya Janata Party won one seat. Another ally, the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), secured four seats.

Although Congress has already announced support for Vijay, Governor Arlekar reportedly stated that TVK would not be invited to form the government unless it can demonstrate the support of at least 118 MLAs.
