Beijing, Apr 22 (V7N): A high-level delegation of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, held a meeting with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng in Beijing, discussing a wide range of bilateral issues and future cooperation between Bangladesh and China.
The meeting took place on Tuesday afternoon at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. The delegation also held discussions with Liu Haixing, Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC), at the IDCPC headquarters.
According to BNP media sources, both sides expressed commitment to strengthening bilateral relations based on mutual respect and equality. They emphasized expanding high-level political engagement and institutional dialogue to deepen cooperation between the two countries.
The BNP delegation highlighted the historical foundations of Bangladesh-China relations, initiated during the tenure of former President Ziaur Rahman and later strengthened under former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, expressing optimism that relations would reach new heights in the future.
The two sides also discussed the possibility of a memorandum of understanding to enhance party-to-party relations, regular exchanges, and structured cooperation between BNP and the CPC.
During the discussions, Mirza Fakhrul reiterated that Bangladesh’s foreign policy prioritizes national interest, sovereignty, security, and public welfare under the principle of “Bangladesh First.” He also reaffirmed Bangladesh’s firm support for the “One China Policy.”
The BNP leader sought China’s continued support in addressing the Rohingya crisis, stressing the importance of Beijing’s constructive role in ensuring a safe, dignified, and voluntary repatriation of displaced Rohingya refugees.
He also raised the issue of the integrated management project of the Teesta River, emphasizing China’s potential partnership in supporting livelihoods in northern Bangladesh.
The delegation further discussed expanding cooperation in renewable energy, green technology, electric vehicles, battery manufacturing, and light and medium industries. They also highlighted opportunities for collaboration in defense training, institutional development, and knowledge exchange.
Bangladesh expressed interest in learning from China’s expertise in urban management, waste treatment, water purification, and rural development. The delegation also referred to the proposed Bangladesh-China Friendship Hospital, seeking cooperation in advanced medical technologies, including robotic surgery, vaccination programs, and public health system development.
Both Chinese leaders described Bangladesh as an important partner and neighbor, reaffirming commitment to strengthening relations based on mutual trust, respect, and shared development goals. They also expressed willingness to continue cooperation across multiple sectors and enhance people-to-people exchanges.
The BNP delegation included senior party leaders and advisors from various wings, including international affairs, health, culture, and student and youth organizations.
