Dhaka, Feb 16 (V7N) — United Nations Secretary-General United Nations Antonio Guterres has urged people across the globe to embrace peace, humanity, and solidarity as the holy month of Ramadan begins.
In a message marking the start of Ramadan, Guterres described the month as a sacred period of reflection, prayer, and spiritual renewal for Muslims worldwide, saying it represents a powerful vision of hope and peace.
However, he noted that for many people around the world, that hope remains distant. He highlighted the suffering caused by conflict, hunger, displacement, and discrimination, pointing to crises spanning from Afghanistan and Yemen to Gaza and Sudan.
Amid what he called difficult and divisive times, the UN chief emphasized Ramadan’s timeless message of compassion and unity. He called on the global community to bridge divisions, support those in need, and uphold the rights and dignity of every person.
Guterres also shared that each year he visits a Muslim community and observes a day of fasting with them as a gesture of solidarity, saying the experience continually inspires him with Ramadan’s spirit of peace and generosity.
He expressed hope that the holy month will motivate people everywhere to work together toward building a more peaceful, inclusive, and just world for all.
