Tehran, Feb 02 (V7N) — Erfan Soltani, who was arrested in Iran for his involvement in anti-government protests and was scheduled to be executed on January 14, has been released on bail, according to his lawyer.
Soltani’s lawyer, Amir Mousakhani, told AFP that Soltani was released on Saturday (January 31) after posting bail. Upon his release, Soltani also received all of his personal belongings, including his mobile phone.
According to Mousakhani, approximately $12,600 was paid as bail to secure his release. The development was also reported by US media outlet CNN.
Erfan Soltani was arrested in January last year in the Fardis area of western Tehran during nationwide anti-government protests. He was subsequently detained at a detention center in Tehran.
Iran’s judiciary had charged Soltani with spreading propaganda against the Islamic system and acting against national security, allegations commonly brought against protest-related detainees.
Following his arrest and sentencing, the case drew international attention. Former US President Donald Trump had warned that Washington would take “very strong measures” against Iran if Soltani were executed.
The Iranian authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the reasons behind his release on bail or the future course of the case.
