New York, Jan 13 (V7N) — United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres voiced deep concern over reports of violent crackdowns and the excessive use of force against protesters amid ongoing anti-government demonstrations across Iran. As the unrest enters its third week, Guterres urged Iranian authorities to exercise the highest degree of restraint and to restore internet and communication services immediately.
In a statement released on January 11, Guterres’ spokesperson emphasized that all Iranians have the fundamental right to express their grievances, dissatisfaction, and demands peacefully and without fear. The statement underlined that freedom of expression, the right to assemble, and the right to form organizations, as guaranteed under international law, must be fully respected and protected.
The UN Secretary-General called on Iranian authorities to refrain from unnecessary or disproportionate use of force. He also stressed the importance of ensuring reliable information on incidents of violence and human rights violations, noting that the restoration of internet and mobile communications is critical to achieving this goal.
On January 8, Iranian authorities disrupted internet and mobile communications, severely hindering the flow of information both within the country and internationally. Human rights organizations and international observers have stated that this communication blackout makes it increasingly difficult to verify the actual situation on the ground.
The protests began on December 28 following a sudden and severe devaluation of Iran’s national currency. Initially sparked by economic grievances and rising living costs, the movement quickly expanded into broader political dissent, spreading to at least 46 cities across the country.
According to available reports, at least a dozen people, including five children, have been killed and many more injured in clashes between protesters and security forces. Iranian parliamentary officials have also confirmed casualties among security personnel during the confrontations.
International concern over the situation in Iran continues to grow. The United Nations and other global organizations have repeatedly called for an end to violence, the protection of human rights, and the pursuit of peaceful dialogue as the only viable path forward to resolve the crisis.
