Havana, Dec 09 (V7N) — Cuba’s former finance minister Alejandro Gil has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty on multiple corruption charges. The verdict was delivered on Monday (December 8) by a tribunal of the country’s Supreme Court, according to a report by British news agency Reuters.
In a statement, the court said Gil abused his position of power to obtain personal benefits through espionage and fraudulent activities. He was also accused of receiving money from foreign companies and bribing other government officials to legitimize the illegal acquisition of assets.
Alejandro Gil was once considered a close ally of President Miguel Díaz-Canel and played a key role in introducing major economic reforms in 2021. However, those reforms proved short-lived. Gil was removed from office by President Díaz-Canel in February 2024 and had remained out of public view since his dismissal.
Observers see the court’s ruling as a strong signal against high-level corruption and violations of state policy in Cuba. The life sentence handed down to the former finance minister has brought renewed attention to the country’s political and economic landscape.
