Yangon, Oct 08 (V7N) – At least 24 people were killed and 47 others injured after a military airstrike targeted a crowd during the traditional Thadinggyut full moon festival in Chaung U township of Myanmar on Monday evening (October 6).

According to members of the festival’s organizing committee, the attack occurred around 7 p.m., when more than a hundred people had gathered to celebrate the Buddhist holiday and participate in anti-junta demonstrations.

Witnesses reported that military forces dropped bombs from the air, striking the festival grounds and causing heavy casualties.

The festival was meant to feature a candlelight vigil protesting the junta’s policies.

In a statement, Amnesty International condemned the attack as “brutal and heinous,” saying it reflects how Myanmar’s civilians remain in grave danger under continued military repression.
