Beijing, Oct 06 (V7N) – Typhoon Matmo slammed into Suwon, Guangdong Province, on Sunday, bringing torrential rain and strong winds to southern China during one of the country’s busiest holiday seasons.
According to Chinese meteorological authorities, the typhoon made landfall along the coast at 2:50 p.m. local time, with maximum sustained winds reaching 151 kilometers per hour.
Before striking China, Typhoon Matmo had already caused heavy flooding and casualties in the Philippines. As it moved across the South China Sea, it weakened slightly but still retained enough strength to disrupt travel and infrastructure across the coastal regions of southern China.
The storm arrived in the middle of the eight-day National Day holiday, which began last Wednesday, a period when millions of Chinese citizens travel nationwide. The timing of the storm caused severe disruptions:
-
Ferry services in Hainan Province were suspended from Saturday evening.
-
Several train and bus routes were temporarily halted.
-
Numerous flights were cancelled as a safety measure.
Meteorologists predict that Typhoon Matmo will continue moving inland across Guangdong, gradually weakening into a tropical storm before dissipating. Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
