Tel Aviv, Aug 03 (V7N) – Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has called for an end to the ongoing war in Gaza, stating that the conflict no longer enjoys majority support among the Israeli public. His remarks have intensified an already heated political debate as divisions within Israeli society over the Gaza campaign continue to grow.

In a statement posted on social media, Lapid wrote:

“There was a fundamental condition in every war in Israel — a majority. If the majority of the people do not support the war, do not believe in its goals, or do not trust the leadership, then the war cannot be waged. None of these three are present now. So it is time to end the war and return the hostages.”

Lapid’s comments highlight growing concerns not only about the military objectives but also about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. In a previous statement on July 29, he said:

“Israel must prevent a famine in Gaza – on the one hand, as a reflection of the values of the Jewish people, and on the other, to not support Hamas’s propaganda.”

He warned that Israel risks international isolation if the situation continues to deteriorate, adding:

“If this situation does not change radically, sanctions will be imposed on Israel and Israeli citizens will pay the price. Every Israeli traveling abroad must now fear that they will be attacked.”

The Israeli government responded sharply to Lapid’s statements, reaffirming its hardline stance:

“The full blockade will remain in place until the Hamas hostages are released.”

As the international community closely monitors the situation, Lapid’s intervention underscores the mounting political pressure within Israel to reconsider its war strategy — both for humanitarian reasons and to preserve Israel’s global standing.
