Dec 11, (V7N) - Bangladesh’s proud streak of four consecutive bilateral series wins came to an end with a seven-wicket defeat to West Indies in the second ODI at Warner Park, Basseterre, St Kitts, giving the West Indies an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. This result follows a five-wicket loss in the first ODI, which snapped Bangladesh’s 11-match winning streak.

Bangladesh’s Struggle with the Bat

After being asked to bat first, Bangladesh were in deep trouble early, reduced to 115-7. However, a strong 92-run partnership between veteran Mahmudullah Riyad (62) and Tanzim Hasan Sakib (45) helped Bangladesh reach 227 all out. The duo set a new record for the highest eighth-wicket partnership for Bangladesh, surpassing the previous 84-run stand against New Zealand in 2019.

Opener Tanzid Hasan Tamim also contributed with a quick-fire 46 off 33 balls, continuing his solid form from the first ODI. But the early wickets of Soumya Sarkar (2), Liton Das (4), and captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz (1) left Bangladesh in a precarious position. Jayden Seals (4-22) was the star for West Indies with the ball, picking up career-best figures and helping dismantle the Bangladesh middle order.

West Indies' Dominant Chase

In response, West Indies chased down the target of 228 with ease, reaching 230-3 in 41.3 overs. The opening partnership between Brandon King (82 off 76 balls) and Evin Lewis (49 off 62 balls) laid a strong foundation, adding 109 runs. Lewis was forced to take medical treatment after being hit by a delivery from fast bowler Nahid Rana, but he returned to hit a six before being dismissed. King, who struck eight fours and three sixes, reached his seventh half-century off 54 balls.

Keacy Carty (45) continued the charge before being dismissed by Afif Hossain. Sherfane Rutherford (17*) and captain Shai Hope (22*) completed the job, with Rutherford hitting a towering six to seal the victory.

The Final ODI

With West Indies now having an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, the third and final ODI will take place on Thursday, where Bangladesh will look to salvage some pride and avoid a 3-0 whitewash.
