Kyiv/Moscow, May 06 (V7N) – In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Ukraine has launched a major drone attack on Moscow, prompting temporary closure of four major airports in the Russian capital. The attack marks the second consecutive night of Ukrainian drone strikes on Moscow.
According to a report by BBC, Russia’s aviation regulator Rosaviatsia ordered the closure of Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, and Zhukovsky airports for safety reasons. The closures come after multiple Ukrainian drones were detected flying over the capital.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that at least 19 drones were launched from different directions, most of which were successfully intercepted by Russian air defenses. However, debris from some of the downed drones landed on city roads, sparking public panic. No casualties have been reported so far.
Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone strike in Russia’s Kursk region reportedly damaged a power substation in the town of Rylsk, injuring two teenagers and causing power outages in several areas.
The Ukrainian military claimed responsibility for a successful strike on a Russian drone command center near Teotkino in the Kursk region. Ukrainian forces reported causing significant Russian casualties in the operation.
Russian military bloggers indicated that Ukrainian troops attempted to breach the border into Kursk, using armored vehicles across minefields. Russian forces responded by destroying bridges to prevent advancement.
In anticipation of a possible Russian counteroffensive, authorities in Ukraine’s Sumy region ordered the evacuation of residents from two border settlements.
Ukraine briefly gained control of certain areas in the Kursk region during a surprise operation in August last year, though Russia later claimed full recovery of the territory. However, Ukrainian officials maintain that their forces remain active in the region.
As of now, Ukraine has not issued an official statement regarding the latest drone attack in Moscow.
